China Pictures 3

This is the entrance to one of the Three Gorges as seen from the deck of the cruise boat.  Unfortunately, I didn’t note which gorge.  You’ve probably seen paintings of southern China with mountains shrouded in mist, and that was how they really appeared.

On a side trip from the Yangtze, we went up the Shennong Stream in boats called Sampans.  The boatmen stand up to row, and sometimes sing as they row.  Farther upstream where the water is too shallow to row, they get out and pull the boats with bamboo ropes.

The boatmen on the Shennong Stream wore these fiber sandals while they stood and rowed.  At the bottom of the picture is a coil of bamboo rope

The Yangtze was surprisingly fast-moving and turbulent.  Ripples, swirls, and whirlpools like this were common sights.

Our last night on the river also provided the most beautiful sunset of the cruise.

Our cruise ended in Chongqing, and we had a chance for some sightseeing there.  This is a scene in a street market.  There are items for sale that you don’t typically see in King Soopers.  I think these are live eels.
