Agra and Around

Agra is the third city in India’s “Golden Triangle”, along with Delhi and Jaipur.
Agra is best known as the site of the Taj Mahal.

Camels pulling carts are a common sight on the road from Jaipur to Agra.

Hitching a ride, Indian style, on the main road from Jaipur to Agra.

The Holi festival was approaching as we reached Agra.  Part of the tradition of Holi is to throw colored powder on each other.  These people were selling the colors in preparation.

This was our first view of the Taj Mahal.  “The Taj”, as we in the know call it, was build by Mughal emporer Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife Mumtaz.  It was completed in 1643, after 12 years of construction.

Another view of the Taj.  The building is made of marble, with inlaid semi-precious stones.

The evening light made the Taj seem to glow.

Shah Jahan was later imprisoned in Agra Fort by his own son Aurangzeb.  The fort itself dates back to 1156.

Shah Jahan may have had a view of the Taj from his cell at Agra Fort.

Another way of catching a ride in India.  This is on the main highway back to Delhi from Agra.
