China Panoramics
These pictures are from a trip I took to China in 2001, and were taken with a special rotating panoramic camera. Each shows a view of about 180 degrees. You can see more about the camera here.

The Shanghai waterfront

Central Shanghai at night. The Shanghai Museum is on the left, and the opera house is on the far right.

The lighted freeways of Shanghai. It’s still amazing to me that they would do this.

A Yangtze gorge. This view shows the steep riverbanks in the gorges.

The Bridge and Crew of our cruise boat. The captain is watching the river and signals the helmsman.

The Three Gorges Dam Construction Project as of 2001. This was a HUGE project only partially visible in this view which is somewhat obscured by rain. The dam itself extends in the left part of the picture near the two orange cranes. The terraced area on the right is the excavation for five levels of locks which will raise boats up to lake level. The project was scheduled to complete in 2009, creating a reservoir about 400 miles long and flooding many towns along the river.

Central Wan Zhou. This is a medium-sized city, also called Wan Xian. Colorful city scenes like this are common.

Street corner in Xian. This is a typical Asia scene, with people selling food outdoors at night.
